Vintage Six Part Routine - American Cabaret

Saturday 26th April 2025 | 09:00 - 11:00

Studio 1 | Danceworks Studios - 62 King Street, Palmerston North, 4410

The classic American Cabaret style routine typically had five to seven parts, alternating between fast and slow songs. In this workshop, you will learn six different mini-segments in one sampler song, distilling the essence of the live music nightclub era.

  • Entry
  • Veil tricks (while wearing finger cymbals!)
  • “Fauxloric” finger cymbal choreography by my teacher Sahar, 80s San Francisco nightclub dancer
  • Chiftitelli taxim, optional floorwork
  • Drum solo
  • Finale reprise

We will learn three different strategies in the course of the routine: - Choreography - Improvisation - Structured Improvisation

Please bring finger cymbals and a chiffon veil, some will be available to borrow. You may also bring a balancing prop if you are already comfortable using it (such as sword, tray, pot) - this may be used during the chiftitelli rhythm section.

Be prepared to take video at recommended intervals for best retention of the material.
